Empress Palpatine

While waiting for dinner the T.V. happened to be on. The game show "Jeapordy" was on. The last question for the panel was who was the character villian who had a name that means "father." The answer was "Darth Vader" because vader is the word for father in Dutch. Weird, huh. In all the years I had been into Star Wars, that was the first time I heard it. (I had almost guessed the answer thinking, "I wonder if...). I had assumed Vader was from the word invader. Maybe Lucas meant both.
"Darth Father" what a name for a Sith! Perhaps it fits a few fathers out there?

there was two lines of thinking on this for as long as i can remember, one was that vader was a sith abbreviation, where Invader was one of the possibilities.
The other, as you said was the Dutch translation.
Going by the dutch translation, and by other sources which i cant find right now, Darth Vader ends up quite literally as "Dark Father" neat huh?

This sounds like great inspiration to design a Father's Day card. Dad can be sitting with a beer or scotch in one hand and wearing a long black hooded robe. That would have fit mine!

There was an old interview with George Lucas that I remember when he said that Vader was short for invader. The Dutch word for father I just heard tonight while watching Jeoardy with Empress Palpatine. The interview took place in 1978 so lucas was not going to devulge the father thing because back then Empire Strikes Back was in the writeing stage. Lucas did not want to tip his mit back then. Hind sight is 20/20.

"because vader is the word for father in Dutch. "
woah weird. I'm half dutch and I didn't know that, my dad was born in Holland. lol. I bet my dad never told me so I wouldn't call him Vador when we get in a squabble. I love him, but oh my we can get into some interesting fights.
:fight2: (this smiley is appropriate for me in this case. j/k)

Mine, hilariously, means "light" in Greek.
I swear by the gods and the Force it was NOT intentional. :D

Yes, as a matter of fact, they can. :)

Funny, becaue i always have seen the force as been a manifestation of something without any need of gods.

It's always a matter of perspective and point of view. :)

Well it sounds something like " god bless the pagans"...

You'd be amazed at how many different perspectives there are out there about deity, not to mention how they relate to the Force. :)

Amaze me, then, tell me all about it.
Amaze me, then, tell me all about it.
I have met Jedi who were Christian, Jewish, Wiccan, Muslim, and then there's myself, a Greek pagan. :)
Simply put, if that many different types of perspectives have their own take on the Force, it is truly universal.

To me, the moment you enbrace the way of the force, should it be light or dark, all the former religions loose all the meaning, thats why i was saying that.

Quite true. There's a difference, IMHO, between spirituality and religion.
It is telling that the term itself, religion, comes from the Latin "religio" meaning "to bind."
