THe 501st are Vaders personal stormtroopers.
To add to that, They are referred to most commonly as "Vader's Fist", they fought on geonosis, they were responsible for the attack on the jedi temple, they are the best of the best in the imperial army, although technically despite their elite status they are still regular ground troops.

When Lord Vader or the Emperor require success in the most difficult and complex assignments of the Galactic Civil War, they call upon the 501st Legion, the elite stormtroopers also known as Vader's Fist. When Lucasfilm needs to fly the Star Wars banner in a way that will turn heads and show the power of the saga, they do the same.

Ah, thanx for the tips.
Well, under the light of all that, i think its farly rightfull to consider them as a elite force. Even if not especialy equiped.

Sounds like to me the 501 Storm Troopers would be a mixture of Special Forces meets Military Intelogance. I say that because they were privy to TOP SECRET information. The 501 was informed that they were to go to the temple to help Vader Kill the Jedi. They obviously new about order66 in advace. In America that would be at least a GS 18. These guys are like The C.I.A. and the best military unit possible. Boy we could sure use some unit like that here.I bet that would shape things up.

Definately seems that way, especially if you ever play Battlefront II and pay attention to all the cutscenes and narration. Oh, they knew alright

Well, every elite troop knows when to keep its mouth shut and its eyes open.
so
that makes the elite troops.

Are the only costuming group I know of that are endorsed by George Lucas himself. If you go to their site, they have many actors from all 6 movies as members. In fact David Prowse, the man that played Darth Vader in 4,5 an 6 I believe is a co-orginator of the site.

Something I found very interesting while surfing the site, the Sith Lord profiles, did any of you noticed the "CLONE EMPORER?" That person had his entire costume and lightsaber faberacted based on the character from the expanded universe. Check him and and visit is site, I even had to admit, I was very taken!

Thats interesting, i never knew Prowse had anything to do with them.
When i get a minute ill look up the clone emperor character, i liked that character from Dark Empire, and i suddenly really want to see what it would look like in reality :)

I take that as a very serious and extreamly strong statement for George Lucas to officially back them up. Master Thompson can you provide a link to the 501st web site? I would like to see it. Lucas is very picky and is very slow to put it mildly to support anything Sith or Jedi related in fandom. He chose the 501st the very unit that helped my husband ( Darth Vader) kill all the Jedi in the temple, very INTERESTING! This is a loaded action on Lucas'es part. As Mrs. Darth Vader the implications are cool. I like it.
