View Full Version : Dark AND Light used by Sith?
Empress Palpatine

This has come up in other places, but was never addressed directly (at least as far as I can recall).
The usual assumption is Jedi only use the Light Side and Sith only use the Dark Side. On the net some label those who use both as "Unified Force" or "Shadow" or whatever. Palpatine in Episode 3 clearly stated that a Sith uses both sides whereas the Jedi only use the Light Side. The Sith way was a broader view, he said; and the Jedi way narrow.
The question is, is this both side view your understanding of Sith; or are there some who would only use the Dark Side exclusively (and if so, how does that work?)

I believe in useing both the light side and the dark side of the Force. Here I agree with Palpatine in episode III. It is also wiser to look at the Whole Force in all its aspects. This is not new because the idea of balanceing the Yin/ Yang goes way back in Chinese history, Lucas just reminded everyone of one of the most ancient forms of religions. The idea of balance is core to Shamanism. Nature is always trying to maintain balance. It is man and his reclessness that has throughn things out of balance.

I often find myself using the "light" side of the force as camouflage against my real inner thoughts. I am known by people around me as an exteremly friendly guy who is always smiling, in reality, I often think how easy it would be to slit their throats or stab them in the back.
One of the weaknesses of the dark side is that it often scares and alienates the people around you, but the thing is, you need them to do you tasks for you.
So I guess I have a Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde perspective.

Interesting question. I have come across sites with very contrary views. Some view the Jedi as using the whole Force & Sith part & then, others state the exact opposite. I personally view that both the Jedi & Sith use the complete Force but it is merely a question of how they access the energy. Jedi are supposed to be in a state of peace, while Sith are supposed to access the Force through rage, hatred and anger. I dont think either is fully true. I mean it is impossible to stay angry all the time unless you are Henry Rollins or something. lol I think the Sith tend to use the darker passions to a much greater extent, but I dont think a Sith would ever limit themselves.

I have to agree with Seti-I-Shadim. I believe that both the Jedi and the Sith use the "complete" force, the difference lies in the triggers used to access it. Mace Windu was a Jedi who dabbled in the dark side. His lightsaber form used several aspects thought to be of the dark side. As I have said before, if you go to extreme to the light or to the dark, you greatly limit your power. I use the light side to keep the rage in check when needed. It brings balance.
Agreement is in order here.
More than a side matter, the "shade" of the force is measured by the use you made of it.
If you use it for something "good", its light.
Used for something "bad", its dark.
Its just that the sith are free to use both ends of the rope, while the jedi are bound to only one side.

Without choas order could not exist. So using both sides is fine because they complete each other.
The question is, is this both side view your understanding of Sith; or are there some who would only use the Dark Side exclusively (and if so, how does that work?)
I can answer this with a link to one of my Livejournal icons:

I believe that each side contains part of the other. With Light, there is always Darkness, and with Darkness, there is always Light. You cannot light a candle without casting a shadow, and by the same token, you cannot see the darkness without there being some amount of light visible.
Recognizing this and embracing it leads to greater strength. Denial only cripples a person. Repression never did anyone any good when it comes down to it, and part of human nature means that regardless of what side you lean towards, there's always the spark of the other.
But...this is all IMHO and YMMV and every other Internet acronym under the sun as a disclaimer. ;)

Light and darkness always will dance togueder, thats a universal truth, but i think that, to a certain extent, with the exception of the shadows jedi´s, the use of one side forsee´s the not usage of the other, for no jedi would dare to use the dark side, and the dark siders feel that that the light side is a beit weak for the purposes they intend.
I have always believed that Sith use both dark and light side. Jedi use light side, darksiders or Dark Jedi use mainly dark side. I think Emperor Palpatine by the time of RotJ (and Dark Empire) was more a Dark Jedi than a Sith

Yeah I'm not sure how many people are going agree with you because Palpatine Was a Sith true and true no part dark jedi.

Palpentine is a Sith. He continued drawing on both sides of the force throughout the movies. He trained several Dark Jedi, but stayed true to the Sith.

First welcome. Second, I'm curious the reasons behind your statement. In what way do you think he was more Dark Jedi than Sith?
Seti
Palpatine a dark jedi ?? Uhhh, and, quoting shadim, how do you defend that statment?

It is correct that Grand Master Windu did access the Dark Side when in battle. All Jedi in effect access the Dark Side but we do not let it consume us, we in effect "turn it off" when it is no longer needed.
Hmmm, dont really think that you should just "turn it off" that easily...
Furdermore, by using it, you would be delivering yourselfs to emotions, and that would go against the jedi code, no ?

Just a little touch of the Sith we have? Using BOTH sides hmmmm.....

Mace Windu did draw on the dark side. In several books I have read, he also describes that he feels the dark side all the time and has to resist the temptation to use it. I do not think that a Jedi can simply "turn off" the dark side. If a Jedi has drawn on that power, it remains a piece of them. Take Anakin as another example-used the dark side to slaughter the Sand People, remained with him.

Does this mean that Jedi are like dieters...they cheat a little?

I don't know if I would say all Jedi are cheaters. I'm sure that some Jedi avoid the dark side all together. There is no evidence that Yoda ever drew upon the dark side. He used it, somewhat, to mask his presence on Dagobah.
I would rather say that the jedi that taste the dark side are more close to join it than the others.
If they know that using a bit of the dark will bring them some extra power, they will use it again and again, and getting deeper inside it from every time.
Mace windu just didnt joined the dark side eventualy because he ended up trying to learn how to fly.

Once you go down the dark path forever will it domiante your destiny. The jedi just cant turn it off even when luke went evil but once again returned to light he still felt that darkness all was in side him.

Welcome to The Coruscant Suddenly Airborne Division. Now Master Windu is going to demonstrate how NOT to arrest a Dark Lord of the Sith.
:haha:
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee. Now if you'll excuse me, its time for my ass to be hurled by an evil Sith Lord &have my bald head splat on the pavement.

- Seti SHOT SCORE! 50 points for Seti I Shadim. THe Anakin division really loves you for this one! A great description of how Mace bit the dust. Which by chance reminds me. Did you ever heard of the rock song called "Another one Bites the Dust" By Queen. Interesting that Master Thompson admits to useing the Dark side. How long do my fellow Sith think it will take Master Thompson to become one of us? Here is where you need a mini Palpatine face with that expression you are mine1

It is my impression that both sides often misunderstand each other. I am EXTREMELY glad to find two boards mature enough to actually have each other on each board and discuss things civilly with no childish flaming. It gives me hope for the whole Jedi and Sith movements.

Too bad its only seti to get the score....
I dont believe Master Thompson will ever join our side, he his truly a light adept, but, if he ever will, it will be because he will realise the little palpatines "wanna-be´s" that hide in the jedi forum...And, as someone told before, it takes one to know one.
